This approach draws strength from three converging insights in the research:
1. Cooperative framing lowers defensiveness.
Moral reframing studies show that people become more open to opposing information when arguments are anchored in shared values and goals (Feinberg & Willer, Personality and Social Psychology Review, 2019).
2. Procedural fairness builds legitimacy.
When participants help define the rules that govern a decision, they are far more willing to accept the outcome, even when the outcome is not in their favor (Tyler, Annual Review of Psychology, 2006). The same holds true for algorithmic systems used in mediation and decision support: transparency, explainability, and shared influence over the process increase trust and acceptance (Lee, Jain, & Srinivasan, CSCW, 2019).
3. AI can enhance, not replace, human reasoning.
Studies on AI-assisted mediation show that large language models can help structure disagreement, identify common ground, and reduce polarization without dictating personal beliefs (Wang et al., arXiv, 2024). Their value lies not in authority but in procedural neutrality, acting as a stabilizing informational scaffold.
Together, these findings support a simple but transformative shift: the purpose of dialogue is not to win but to understand. When groups agree not on conclusions but on the method of inquiry, they create a space where minds can change naturally, without shame, pressure, or performative antagonism.
In a cultural landscape fragmented by partisanship, misinformation, and escalating distrust, collaborative question-making — supported by AI and anchored in shared moral purpose — may offer one of the most promising tools for restoring mutual respect. It reframes disagreement from a battlefield into an exploration. It fosters dignity. It gives people permission to listen. And above all, it builds the conditions in which genuine understanding can emerge.
